Liposuction

It is a widely held belief that anyone can get rid of unwanted fat by minimizing their calorie intake long enough and exercising right. Unfortunately, as many of us know, it’s not always that simple. Many people who have successfully shed pounds are frustrated to discover that they are unable to get rid of stubborn deposits of fat with even the most disciplined diet and workout regimen.

Stubborn pockets of fat, or adipose tissue, can be a problem for men and women of normal body weight, as well. Often this has to do with age-related changes in the metabolism and hormonal fluctuations. Even if you’ve been slim all your life and haven’t gained any weight, as you age you may notice that your clothes no longer fit the way they used to simply because the shape of your body has changed and you have fat in places you never had before.
Men typically suffer from age-related stubborn fat around the belly and the chest, while women mostly tend to develop it around their hips, buttocks, and thighs. But stubborn fat is not always age-related, and there are many younger women who would like to lose inches off their hips, thighs, and buttocks because they are unhappy with their body proportions, as well.

As long as weight is within or near the normal range, a few deposits of fat generally do not pose an immediate health risk. But they can severely compromise a person’s self-esteem and overall quality of life, and liposuction could offer hope for these individuals. If dieting and exercise have proven to be ineffective against your “love handles” or the “spare tire” around your waist, liposuction could help you get rid of stubborn fat and attain a leaner shape by losing inches, not pounds.

Liposuction, also known as body-forming or liposculpture,is a surgical technique that removes excess fat from deposits located between the skin and muscle via small, hollow instruments called cannulas. Liposuction is not a treatment for obesity, and it can’t substitute for proper diet and exercise. It can’t make you thin and keep you that way, but it can effectively slim and reshape specific parts of the body by removing stubborn fat deposits in “problem areas” like those described above. If you’re slightly overweight, liposuction can contribute significantly to boosting your motivation to stick to your weight loss regimen by helping to get rid of pockets of stubborn fat and achieve more pleasing body contours and harmonious proportions.

Liposuction – Personal Consultation

Many patients with stubborn fat deposits on the belly are convinced that abdominoplasty (popularly referred to as a “tummy tuck”) is the only way for them to attain a flatter, more toned abdomen. In many cases, however, liposuction may be a better alternative, since this less invasive procedure may be all that is required to achieve the desired result.

Liposuction is generally a very safe procedure, but there is a limit on the amount of liposuction any given person should have performed at one time, and the saying “less is more” often applies here, as well. Removing large amounts of fat over extensive areas of the body and circular liposuction can be a considerable strain on the body and mean a long recovery time for the patient. In some cases, distributing liposuction over two sessions may be the option of choice to achieve the best possible result with the least amount of risk.

Meeting in person is essential to determine the best approach in your particular case, so if you’re considering abdominoplasty or liposuction, we would like to invite you to come in for a personal consultation. We believe it’s important to take the time to explain the procedure and the potential risks involved to you in person and answer any questions you may have so you can make an informed decision. At that opportunity, we can also carry out any necessary preliminary examinations and we can discuss the various options and determine the best type of anesthesia in your case.

Most patients opt to have liposuction performed under local anesthesia and sedation. Some patients prefer to undergo general anesthesia; however, general anesthesia involves a greater risk, a longer recovery period and higher costs. On the day of the actual surgery, we will go over the procedure with you again and answer any questions you may have beforehand.

The Procedure

We generally use a particularly gentle method for achieving optimal and even removal of fatty tissue known as microcannular tumescent liposuction. In this approach, a special solution is introduced into the fatty tissue that induces local anesthesia, loosens the fat cells, and reduces bleeding by causing the blood vessels to constrict. Tiny tubes called cannula or microcannuale are inserted and set into vibration, gently disengaging the fat cells and emulsifying the tumescent solution, and then used to “suck out” the fat and liquid. This process takes somewhat longer than conventional liposuction using large cannulas, but it is safer and allows even delicate areas like the inner thighs, arms, chin and neck to be reshaped with great precision.

On the day of the operation, we will go over everything with you again and answer any questions you may have beforehand. Since you will be sedated, you will be in a semi-dozing state throughout the procedure itself. Afterwards, you’ll be given special compression garments to wear for some weeks.

After the Procedure

Afterliposuction, most patients need only need to take mild pain medication for a few days until the swelling has subsided. Thankfully complications are rare, but your health and wellbeing are our foremost priority, so if anything should arise that you’re unsure or concerned about, you can reach us on the telephone anytime. You can help to ensure a good outcome and minimize the risk of complications by giving your body the time it needs to recover. You should be able to go about most normal daily activities after a few days, but it takes several weeks for the treated area to heal completely. During this period, you should avoid strenuous physical activities.

We’d be happy to answer any questions you may have about liposuction – just send us an e-mail or give us a call.
